Semi-regular get-toethers?

I just moved to Portland from San Francisco. One of my groups of girlfriends and I would get together about twice a month on Tuesday (sometimes only once a month) to chat, drink wine/beer/cocktails, snack, and work on some craft.

Each session, a person from the group would host at their apartment (ideally no the same person all the time):
- decide what the craft activity will be (making "softies", pizza dough, easter egg decorating, shrinky dinks were some of ours)
- gather basic craft materials and let everyone know what you don't have so people can bring what's needed
- have a few appetizers on hand
- Guests would each bring something to drink, some craft stuff to share if needed, and a snack if they want.

The whole thing really turns out to be very low maintenance since one person should not have to host all the time. We were all a very established group of friends, but I'm thinking it might not be a bad way to meet new people?

If anyone is interested in something like this, lemme know!

  • Someone emailed me with the idea of doing pumpkin carving for the first event -- it's cheap, can be done in one session, and is kinda silly. (and I want to carve a pumpkin!)

My new place is only a studio (boo), and I was hoping to be out sooner rather than later and into a bigger place, but it looks as though I"ll be in here a little while - a bit too small for a craft gathering. But, there -is- a pretty sweet roofdeck that we could use. But that would only be good on a weekend during the day, with good weather. : |
    • my house is going through a major transition...which is to say I couldn't necessarily make sure it was as well kempt as usual, but it is a house and it could accomadate a handful of people. I live in the North Portland area. Takers?
      • Sounds good to me!

What kind of craft did you want to do?
        • carving pumpkins sounds like a great ice breaker to me. Anything relatively simple so as to not cause performance anxiety my firtst time meeting people, heh. The other thing I forgot to mention is my house has a dog and two cats, so if anyone is adverse to animals it wouldn't work out.
          • I love it - pumpkin carving. Silly! We could have everyone bring their own pumpkin, and maybe I'll bring a few extras in case someone forgets. Goodwill has lots of halloween stuff, I'll check if they have cheap pumpkin carving tools. I can make a snack to bring to share too.

Any week night is fine with me . . .
            • Unsu...

I would love to carve a pumpkin! Can do it any night except Wednesdays.
              • Fabulous! Would a Thursday night work? Because my Tuesdays are kinda jam packed and high stress. Any votes for what time? I'll pick up one or two carving kits and a couple of pumpkins.
                • What about Thursday the 18th or the 25th? (any earlier and they'll be icky by Halloween!) If we do the 18th, then they'll need to last 2 weeks, if we do the 25th than one week. (although I suppose it doesn't -really- matter!)
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
oh yeah, there are also about 4 girls who emailed me off of tribe about wanting to join too, fyi. I just need to give them the details of the first get together.
                    • Thursdays work for me, I'd prefer 7ish...but I can swing 8:00 if it needs to be.
                      Looking forward to some carvin!
                      • You know, not only am I interested, but I actually hosted a craft night at my house this last Friday. It was sooo fun. We made free-hand dink pendants. Yay. And, I'm open to inviting ya'll to mine, or going to yours would be rad. Only thing I work swing shift and 7p Thursdays would not work for me as I work until 10p. So, I've commited to hosting at least one craft night a month, on a Friday (I have Friday and Saturday off).
