I just moved to Portland from San Francisco. One of my groups of girlfriends and I would get together about twice a month on Tuesday (sometimes only once a month) to chat, drink wine/beer/cocktails, snack, and work on some craft.

Each session, a person from the group would host at their apartment (ideally no the same person all the time):
- decide what the craft activity will be (making "softies", pizza dough, easter egg decorating, shrinky dinks were some of ours)
- gather basic craft materials and let everyone know what you don't have so people can bring what's needed
- have a few appetizers on hand
- Guests would each bring something to drink, some craft stuff to share if needed, and a snack if they want.

The whole thing really turns out to be very low maintenance since one person should not have to host all the time. We were all a very established group of friends, but I'm thinking it might not be a bad way to meet new people?

If anyone is interested in something like this, lemme know!

I have attached a diagram of it on my profile's picture section. If anyone is interested in sewing this up for me I will pay you for your time/materials. It is a large piece of cloth. I would recommend using one of those cotton painters drop cloths. I need it finished by next Weds (July 18th). Please let me know if you are interested.

I just want you to take the talavera tiles I give you and make a top for it, sealed well enough so that it can live outdoors in our rainy winters. I'm thinking 30" tall and 30" in diameter (if round) or on a side (if square). I'm not too picky about the table base, but I'm not looking for some salvaged piece of junk. Let me know if you're interested, thanks!

hi all
sorry for the4 short notice, I received this email from the church of craft group

"Craft Supply Swap this weekend!

It's Sunday, May 27th, from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.
We're at The 100th Monkey Studio, which is at 110 SE 16th Ave. It's the low, green building at the corner of SE 16th and Ankeny. There is plenty of street parking.

Here are some details for you:

- Please bring any art or craft materials that you aren't using anymore. We're open to pretty much everything -- paints, fabrics, yarn, beads, buttons, pens and pencils, clay, paper . . . .

The only stuff we're not looking for are those random cast-off things you've been hanging onto in case that perfect project comes along. You know . . . those paper-towel tubes and the guts of that old transistor radio. :-)

- There is no admission fee for this event. We do ask that you bring something to swap. The 100th Monkey Studio will have a collection jar to take donations for their Art Scholarship fund, in case you'd like to donate a bit.

- You are welcome to take any art or craft materials you can use from the swap. We're not placing limits on what people take, but we hope everyone will respect that this is a community event, and leave plenty for everyone else. We are donating a large portion of the leftover material to Outside In.

- We will have three free craft tables going on during the day, so you can also hang out and make stuff:

From 11:00 - 1:00, we'll be making Fabric Scrap Flower Pins.

From 1:00 - 3:00, we'll be making Refrigerator Magnets, using all kinds of found objects.

From 3:00 - 4:00, we'll be making Fused Fabric Greeting Cards. "

Oddly enough, SCRAP does not take scraps. I've been hoarding them because I don't want them to end up in a landfill. Every once in a while I meet someone who can use them for something, but really not often enough.

What do you all do with your scraps? Does anyone have any ideas for recycling or re-using these scraps? I thought about trying to make paper with the cotton scraps, has anyone ever tried this? If anyone needs any little bits of ruffled lace, silk, nylon, or cotton, I have whole boatload!

2 - Construction-quality wood beams
3 - Sheets of canvas, about 1.5 times the size of a king-size bedsheet
4 - A plain black flag(roughly the size of a holiday flag for all you prior military people) which will not stay plain black for too long.
5 - Space to store and work on said bus(once it's acquired) while it's being transformed from normal bus to rolling war galleon.

Swap-o-Rama-Rama is coming to Portland in February and we think YOU would like to participate…

The Event: Swap-O-Rama-Rama
Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a clothing swap combined with a variety of do-it-yourself mini-workshops in which a community explores creative reuse through the recycling of used clothing.

Attendees bring at least one bag of unwanted clothing and a small donation ($0 - $10 sliding scale). Every swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing—the unwanted clothing of all who attend. Participants can take as little or as much clothing from this pile as they like, it's all free.

“Transformation Stations” hosted by various craft mavens provide places for participants to make modifications to their new/used duds. Stations might offer: conversion from T-shirt to purse/patch/skirt/whatever, decoration and embellishment, silk screening, stenciling, iron-ons, or a sewing machine for taking pants and skirts in, out, up, or down, and adding pockets, ruffles, fringe, or whatever we come up with.

You can read more about the Swap-O-Rama-Rama concept here: http://www.swaporamarama.org/. The Portland event is planned for Sunday, February 4 from 2-6pm at The 100th Monkey Studio, located at 110 SE 16th Avenue.

The Beneficiary:
All profits (money left over after we cover the costs of producing the event) will be donated to The Raphael House, a shelter for women and children who are fleeing domestic violence. We will also give them any leftover clothing from the event.

How You Can Participate:
1. Volunteer to host an alteration station! We’d love to have Portland’s most creative craft mavens strutting their stuff and sharing knowledge with other women. A great opportunity to advertise your own class/shop/services at the same time!
2. Promote the event – send an announcement out to your mailing lists, tell your friends, mention it on your blog…
3. Attend the event. It should be a lot of fun, and who knows what goodies you’ll find there!
4. Pass the word on to other craft mavens – do you know someone else who would like to host a station?
5. Be a sponsor – donate your crafty wares to the raffle and door prize.

About Us:
We are three friends (Erika, Irene & Julia) who have lots of creative energy and a strong desire to contribute to the thriving creative DIY/recycling community in Portland.

Please contact us at sorrpdx@yahoo.com or message me on Tribe if you’d like to participate or if you would like more information. Yaay for Craft Rock Stars!

It's also not rentable during office hours... so evenings are the only choice... now I don't mind having it at my place, but I have no dining table. If anyone here has a folding table or two (I guess I should invest in one) and some chairs, I think we can manage in my place... but if you're allergic to cats, either take meds or we'll plan something another time.

So, who's interested and what are your opinions?
~Community room or my place? I'm fine with it either way.
~What date? A Saturday or Sunday? During the day it would have to be at my place, unless a third option pops up. I'm planning on being gone from 9/29 to 10/9 (long overdue travel), which includes a convention... it would be nice to get some work done before that trip... but that's pretty short notice.

I have a sewing machine... although after this last move, I have to see if the poor thing still works. This is the last time i'm letting someone else handle my sewing machine. I've already put a lot of money into repairs on that blasted thing.

So, here's some possible dates:
9/2
9/3
9/9
9/10
9/16
9/17
Or into October... Any thoughts?
IRON ARTIST 2005
IRON ARTIST – SCRAP’s annual FUNdraiser
July 23rd, 2005 at the Wonder Ballroom 128 NE Russell
What is Iron Artist? This high-energy celebration of creative reuse is a timed three-hour “sculpt-off” where artist teams create sculptures from reused materials provided by SCRAP, the ReBuilding Center, Wacky Willy’s and Free Geek. It has been described as one part Iron Chef and one part Junk Yard Wars. Each team will receive boxes of similar materials and race against the clock to create their masterpiece! A theme for the sculptures will be announced when the competition begins, and in the end, a panel of celebrity judges will critique the final pieces. Teams are encouraged to wear costumes, bring fans, supporters and cheerleaders for encouragement! The event is timed and monitored by a raucous team of referees who will throw yellow flags while handing out bonus points and demerits. Scrappy Family Friendly carnival games, live music and loud-mouthed emcees will entertain the crowd throughout the competition.
How can I form a team? As this is a FUNdraiser, team registration is $250. The first 10 paid teams will compete for the coveted Cup du SCRAP. Team applications and competition rules are available at http://www.scrapaction.org/iron.html.
How can I volunteer at the event? Volunteers are needed to help run all aspects of the event. Tasks include: planning, set-up, break down, admissions, running a carnival game, selling beer, selling scrap merchandise, etc. Contact Babs (babsia@gmail.com) for more information.
Who are the Celebrity Judges? So far we have confirmed Marjorie Skinner (Portland Mercury Coordinating Editor), David Bragdon (Metro City Council), and Nan Curtis (Curator of PNCA’s Feldman Gallery). Invitations have been extended to Darcelle (entertainer and judge at the first Iron Artist), Daria O’Neill (TV & Radio Personality, judge at Iron Artist ’04) and Sam Adams (Portland Commissioner).
What is the fundraising goal? We anticipate 600-800 people throughout the day and hope to raise $10,000 towards our $140,000 annual budget.
How can my business sponsor this event? What an excellent question. We are looking for business sponsors to help cover the costs of putting this event together. Donations can be financial, in-kind (beverages, t-shirt printing, promotional materials, etc) or in the form of gift certificates or prize baskets for the raffle. Send an email to ironartist@scrapaction.org for more information.

Oh also good relatively inexpensive means for framing art would be handy as well. Lend me your places. It would be a great help.

Right now we have 4 craft nights until Burning Man, which is a scary, scary thought for me. Oh, and one of those is on a holiday.

Anyone up for weekly craft nights?

Oh, and for all y'all who are not going to Burning Man, you are still invited to Craft Nights! Just us BM people get a little craft mad around this time of year...
